Travel Tips for Visiting Zambia

Traveling to a remote wilderness like the Luangwa Valley requires a bit of “know-how.” While Zambians are famously some of the friendliest people on earth, being prepared will make your journey smoother. Here are our top tips for a hassle-free Zambian safari.

Visa and Entry

Good news! Zambia has recently waived visa fees for many nationalities (including the UK, USA, and much of the EU). Always check the latest requirements, but for many, entering the “Real Africa” has never been easier or more affordable.

Health and Hydration

Zambia is a malaria-risk area. Consult your travel clinic about the best prophylactics for you. In the Luangwa Valley, the sun is your biggest adversary—drink more water than you think you need and always carry a high-factor SPF.

The “Safari Spirit”

Patience is the most important thing to pack. The bush operates on its own time. Sometimes a leopard is around the next corner; sometimes it’s three hours away. Embrace the “African Time” and enjoy the stillness of the valley.

Cash and Tipping

While most lodges (including ours) accept cards, having some local Kwacha for tips and small purchases in Mfuwe is helpful. Tipping is customary and greatly appreciated by the guides and staff who work tirelessly to make your stay perfect.

A little preparation goes a long way. By following these tips, you can focus on what really matters: the lions roaring in the distance and the stars above the Luangwa.
