What to Expect on a Safari in Zambia

If you’ve never been on a safari before, the “routine” can be a mystery. What do you do all day? Is it safe? What do you eat? At Luangwa Valley Safaris, we want our guests to feel at home from the moment they land at Mfuwe Airport.

The Daily Rhythm A typical day in the Luangwa starts early. You’ll be woken with a knock and a hot cup of coffee before the sun rises.

  • 06:00: The morning drive or walk. This is when the predators are most active.
  • 10:00: Brunch and “Siesta” time. The midday heat is for relaxing by the pool or watching elephants from your deck.
  • 15:30: Afternoon tea and the evening drive, which turns into a night drive after a “Sundowner” drink.

Safety and Wildlife

You are in a wild, unfenced environment. Animals like hippos and elephants often wander through the camps. You will always be escorted by a guide after dark, and you’ll learn the “rules of the bush” quickly—like never running and always listening to your guide.

The Food

People are often surprised by the quality of the food in the middle of the bush. Expect fresh, multi-course meals, sundowner snacks, and cold drinks. Safari life is surprisingly luxurious!

Conclusion Expect to be tired, expect to be dusty, but most of all, expect to be changed. The Luangwa Valley has a way of resetting your internal clock and reminding you what it feels like to be truly alive.
