Please note: As of 2025, the property formerly known as North Luangwa River Lodge is under new ownership and has been completely rebuilt. Now reimagined as North Luangwa Skybeds, the camp offers a fresh, immersive experience in one of the most remote and pristine corners of the Luangwa Valley.
"Wild, remote, incredibly beautiful! For travellers who want to revisit earlier memories of an unspoilt Africa."
- John Henderson, Australia, September 2025
For travelers seeking remote destinations, tranquil beauty, and a safari experience far from the crowds, North Luangwa National Park is truly unmatched. This is not about luxury lodges or simply ticking off wildlife sightings—it’s about space, solitude, and being fully immersed in nature.
During the day, you can explore the park on walking safaris or game drives led by our experienced head guide, Andrew. As night falls, return to your unique “skybed” and fall asleep beneath a canvas of stars, accompanied by the sounds of hyenas, leopards, and elephants.
Thoughtfully designed to blend into the landscape, each "skybed" features comfortable bedding and simple comforts, providing a front-row seat to the night sky. If your ideal safari is defined by solitude, wilderness, and authenticity, North Luangwa Skybeds (formerly North Luangwa RIver Lodge) delivers precisely that—where the true luxury lies in the silence, space, and wild surroundings
Sleep Under the Stars in North Luangwa: The Skybeds Experience
North Luangwa Skybeds (formerly North Luangwa RIver Lodge) features 4 chalets, each offering a ground-floor en-suite room overlooking the Luangwa River. A concrete staircase leads up to a second ‘sky bed’ bedroom, open to the sky with only a mosquito net, providing unobstructed views of the river. Choose to sleep beneath the stars and ebony trees or enjoy the comfort of the traditional bedroom downstairs.
Each unit has a bathroom downstairs which comprises of a bucket shower and toilet. There is no wifi in the chalets, although there is wifi available in the main dining area.
Walk, Explore and Discover the Wild Heart of North Luangwa
North Luangwa National Park offers a style of safari that feels very different from the rest of the Luangwa Valley—more raw, more intimate, and far more focused on true wilderness immersion.
The activities here are shaped by the park’s remoteness, low visitor numbers and long-standing conservation ethos, which means everything is centred on experiencing nature quietly, respectfully and up close.
The park is renowned for walking safaris—arguably some of the best in Zambia. With vast tracts of untouched bush, limited roads and expert guides, walking is the most authentic way to explore the park. You aren’t simply observing wildlife—you’re learning to read tracks, follow signs, understand behaviour and feel part of the landscape. Encounters here feel personal and thrilling, whether you’re tracking buffalo through the riverine forests or quietly watching a herd of elephants cross the floodplain.
While the park is famous for walking, game drives are still offered and provide access to remote areas you can’t reach on foot. The big difference? You won’t share sightings with a queue of vehicles. Most of the time, it’s just you, your guide and the wilderness. The drives are slower, more interpretive and more focused on the full ecosystem—birdlife, plants, predators, the movements of the river—rather than racing from sighting to sighting.
